The hard drive always spins and is quite audible in a silent room. I am looking to get all SSD's mainly for speed and quietness. The question is that should I get something like a MX100 500GB drive for my main drive, then use my existing drive for storage (movies, audio, downloads), or even have external storage (Hot swap?). I would like to not spend a whole lot (no more than 200), but I also don't want to regret my purchase. Also, are PCIe SSD's a decent price/performance?

If your drive is loud, then look for something like a green drive. But, a 512GB ssd is a pretty good investment if you can get it for cheap.

PCI ssds are not a good value yet. Get a traditional 2.5 in SATA SSD.

Replace that with a 500 gb mx100 then no. You will save money and get about double the data.

I hardly use space on it (Gaming computer), and I want to get away from traditional drives. Also, my current SSD is not as fast as the newer SSD's and shows when booting.

Its not loud, its just always on. I tried a green drive before and the speed was inadequate. I would get a 500GB drive for no more than 150 dollars, unless the performance justifies the cost.

I own the ssd and a MAIN internal hdd and i found that the loudest component in my system was infact the hdd. An SSD will give faser boot and load times as well as a better windows experience. It is also very silent (if you listen very closely you may hear some electrical noise).

Ok.... the mx100 is an ssd and it is wicked fast for its price. If you don't use much data you can run your entire system off of it.
