Hello Guys I am installing my RAM right now and I was wondering which slot I should Use as the manual says I should put it on DIMM-2 & 4, while on the motherboard it indicates that I should use 1 & 3 then they say first. So which one should I use? Plz respond ASAP if u can.

thanks in advance

MOBO: Z97-Gmaing 7

The motherboard manual will always tell you, with Asus (and most other boards) it is Slot 1 and 3 ( the one closest to the CPU and the  2nd furthers from the CPU like below:

[ CPU ]                [Mem Slot 1]       [   ]     [Mem Slot 3 ]       [   ]

^ Asuming it is not X79/X99 and based on a conventional board layout (Z87/Z97 etc). There is no harm from putting them in the wrong places, if you get a MEM_ERROR or the BIOS only shows one of the sticks working and not the other one, just shuffle them around - It won't break them.

It doesn't matter whatsoever, but I personally like to have them in the 1st and 2nd slots (Gigabyte Z87X-OC), just because it leaves that extra bit of space for the CPU cooler.

So DIMM 1& 3?

What about the MSI Z97-GAMING 7 ? So the performance doesn't decrease or cause the ram to fail?

Yes, and if that doesn't work then DIMM 2 and 4.

It does. Putting them in DIMM 1/2 or 3/4 won't work on most motherboards. They must be placed 2 apart for dual channel and in all slots for quad channel.

Only way to cause ram to fail is to stab it with a screw driver, or put it underwater.

you are not running your ram in dual channel...the way it works is that you want to populate slot 1 and 3 OR 2 and 4 depending on the motherboard...the user manual will tell you which to populaye first...but slot 1 and 2 is a big no no.

I'm not sure which DIMM slots are labeled as what, but I have mine in opposite as to how @ThatCoolBlueKidd has pictured.

it wont really matter with msi board as long as you use eiter the slot 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 it will work just fine.

i see...its okay then...they are labeled in the order they should be populated.

Yeh sorry about the confusion, it's just that my Gigabyte Z87X-OC has them labeled as [4] [2] [3] [1].

What I was trying to say is that I put mine in the dual-channel config, the furthest away from the CPU.

Yehp, pretty much.

I am confused because, it says use 2&4 in the manual but, the indicator on the motherboard ( the indicator above the ram slots)says use 1&3

you should use the ones furter away from the cpu first.

every intel boards from msi are like that.

It does not matter which slots you use, you just need to make sure that if you are using 2 sticks, they should go in the same colored slots. I usually go for the 2nd and 4th slot from the CPU for better airflow. Some motherboards however require the 1st and 3rd slot to be populated first but its unlikely that your one requires that.

i dont know, the ones that are furter away from the cpu leaving an empty slot, like this: [ ] [x] [ ] [x] ...''x'' being a ram stick.

Pfft you still don't get it do you?

Slots 1 & 3, or 2 & 4. In any direction you may perceive.

If you still don't know, return the mobo because you are not qualified to use it.

thats mean lol...but yeah, as long as you spread them you run in dual channel and it will work regardless...but use the ones further away first its recommended for every msi motherboards they are all made the same way.
