Geforce & Radeon on SAME PC?

Go to solution Solved by QueenDemetria,

You can do it, just install the card and the nvidia drivers. I have a 550 ti and 270X in my workstation and they work together just fine. You will either have to switch the video cable each time you want to switch cards or plug both cards into your monitor(and switch in windows). If you buy a KVM or video switch, you can switch between your cards in windows while only taking up one port on your monitor.

Hi, I currently have a perfectly running PC,

AMD 8350

Radeon HD 6990

etc etc.

however As the Radeon HD 6990 takes too much power, I was thinking of disabling it, and only using it when I need to run heavy games.

The idea was to add a Geforce 510 which I have lying around, from an old Media PC.

Video streaming, browsing etc could be done by the 510.

So the question is.

Will it work? Linus has done Crossfire AND SLI on the same PC before. I'm just wondering about driver issues, as i hear many people doing a "clean" install of windows, when they switch between Nvidia and AMD graphics cards.

-The way I want to select the card to use, is by having one of them connected to the screen by HDMI, the other DVI.

Thus primarily HDMi (510), and have the HD 6990 disabled from device manager (to turn it off?)

Any ideas?

For me it works fine with my 7950 and 480.

EDIT: To switch between them, I found it works to move all monitors to the card you want to use, reboot (sometimes) and then it will be fine.

I think ti could work but it might cause problems in games were you can't select your video adapter. Mostly i see the use for this being one card for gaming and the other for folding or something.

what i say is have the install .exe driver for both nvidia and amd drivers, then also get DDU (http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html) so you uninstall the driver using DDU, and then just run the driver install file and rinse and repeat

"Move all monitors to the card???" What?  - Okay I'm using ONE monitor :-D You mean just switching Between the cable input to the monitor?

How it will be.

1. HDMI is attached to 510

2. DVI is attached to 6990

Then I'll just switch on screen, input signal?

You can switch between the two cards by using the "Screen Resolution" menu in the control panel(or right clicking on your desktop). If the card isn't set as a display it will turn off(well, go in to a very low power mode).

Just buy a GTX 970.

They cost like 2.400 DKK here, cheapest.

that's close to 400 $. I don't have that currently.

I bought the 6990 1½ years ago, for about 250$. -Still waaaay enjoying it :-D

But it's just waste of card life and power, to have it idling on browsing with temps:

GPU 1: 61'C - Due to browsing for some reason. IE, Chrome, Firefox all increase the gpu temp by 10-15 'C

GPU 2: 46'C

So again, Would if i could :D But enjoying the RAW MUSCLE

Clocking down can NEVER hurt, well... okay... it hurts the power supplier because you use less :D

It does not power the card down, as that's simply not a software/driver-level thing: it turns on as soon as you touch your power button, it will stay on until your whole system is off.

Not using it like you propose does lower its power usage though. Simply because it doesn't have to send a refresh to the monitor 60 times/second

Well :-D I can see what you mean. What happens if you clock it down TOO much? like 100MHz or less?? It's 830-880 Normally.

-Really wondering how much of a difference in power usage it will do, with no screen output. - Still might be worth it because one of the GPU's is constantly on 61'C and the other on 47'C except when gaming. which is a waste imo, I don't want one of them to die before the other :'(

TO ALL..

I mean, playing RUNESCAPE and browsing facebook+9gag which i do some hours a day, is REALLY a waste for the poor 6990. Runescape will not do Crossfire of course. Forced it on OpenGL, got very glitchy and caused much more load on BOTH GPU's instead of sharing the load. - So while playing other games than CS:GO, Shadow of Mordor, Crysis 2+3, X3 Albion Prelude, Grid 2, I really don't need to waste the 6990.
I would get shot  by SOME people because of this, So I'm trying to do something about it :D

I don't know how to disable/enable the cards, but you should be able to run then both without problems. I currently own a gtx 970 as the main card and an HD 6670 at once. Both being used for Folding at the same time, all I needed was to install the drivers, nothing else.
