does overclocking really shorten the life of the components? or it will only shortens when goes on really high temperature?

It will shorten the life but, not by very much. I mean depends on the chip set really.

It definitely doesn't prolong the life. It shortens it by an insignificant amount unless you're doing some extreme overclocking.

im just planning to oc @ 4.5 so do you think it will be good as long as i have good cooling?

You forgot to mention the processor.

If you're overclocking a Pentium 4 to 4.5 on ln2 it might not last very long, for example ;D

The frequency isn't really what you need to be concerned with, rather the voltages.

Example: you could run 4.5ghz on a 2500k at 1.25v or 1.5v. 1.5v will accelrate degradation.
