XP "Missing operating system" after defragment

I have an old HP desktop computer running Windows XP its been used for pretty much everything, I was defragging another one of my computers and thought why not do this one too, I'm guessing it probably hadn't ever been defragged before. So I installed IObit Smart Defrag, and it had been running probably 2 hours and the whole screen went black, I thought maybe it was moving display drivers or certain moveable system files, but after about an hour I figured something was wrong so I held down the power button till it turned off, when I turned it back on, it got past the BIOS splash screen then said "Missing Operating System" and that was it. Any advice is appreciated

If your pc hardware can run win 7 upgrade.

hmm can you try seeing if you can find a XP repair disc and burning it from a working computer and booting off it on broke machine. either the bootloader is messed up or the os got currupt

I am not the best with diagnosis but the message sounds like a file was corrupt durning defrag. You might only be able to perform a fresh install.

Alright I'll see if I can find my install disk, but if I'm unable to locate it, what are my options?

try finding a place that offers legal downloads where you still need to activate it with a legit product key

ebay or amazon and try to find a copy of xp that isn't at an insane price. Also keep checkimg the forum I am a very novice user and a fresh install is almost always what I do it is the easiest fix since I always have back ups of my important files.  There are likely people here that can guide you in a diagnostic direction rather than nuking you HD.

If you have an appropriate* Windows XP disc, you can use it to repair the installation. Boot the computer from the XP CD and follow the normal installation prompts until you get to the point where the install finds the current Windows installation. It will then give you a choice (among others) to "Repair the installation"** or words to that effect.

After the repair finishes - it runs just like an install - your system should be back the way it was, desktop, apps, settings -wise, unless the defrag seriously boinked something.

Note - if the repair asks for a validation key, be sure to use your key, not the one that may have come with whatever disc you used.

* by appropriate, I mean the same version, such as "Home Premium" or "Pro". It doesn't have to be "your" disc, as long as you have your own "key".

** this is not the same as the "Repair using the console" choice that comes up earlier.
