An ssd upgrade from an hdd is the most noticeable upgrade you can make on a pc.

What people usually do due to pricing is to get an ssd for the OS and applications and an hdd for everything else (ie storage).

The benefits are that it's faster and uses less energy.

SSD's are definitely not overrated and are easily the biggest and most noticeable upgrade you could make to pretty much any system.

Before I got my first SSD a few years ago I was also thinking, maybe it's not worth it for a faster boot time and a few applications loading faster but after my first SSD arrived I quickly realized that it's not just that. It makes everything faster, the whole experience, everything you do in Windows and any program just becomes snappy and quick, instant in many situations, just... it's an amazing upgrade :P

So.. no, SSD's are definitely not overrated, underrated if anything. I still see many people here with decent systems without an SSD and just think to myself... what are you doing with your money?

I enjoy 10 second boot times.

I also enjoy instant loading on video games.

SSD's are much much better imo than HDD's for anything but storage and total life time.

See, the problem is, if you dont have money. I bought parts in such order: ram, cpu, mobo, psu, hdd, sound card, gpu. Now i still have to buy a CASE for this wired thingy on my table, and only after that i can think of an ssd (still probably will buy better speakers before that).

All because SSD is not necessary to have system working.

Also, if i think about it, i actually even might expand my storage to 2HDD's before an SSD upgrade. That is the problem right there.

Every major benefit SSD has over HDD is still just a benefit. Not a gamechanger.

They are quieter (silent), more reliable, and much faster; basically better in every way.  However of course they are more expensive because of it.  I think SSDs are definitely worth it, it improves the experience a lot.  If you need like 500GB or 1TB+ of storage space though it is probably a better idea to get a mechanical hard drive for your storage, and a 128GB or 256GB SSD to install your OS and programs onto, and that will give you most of the speed benefits of an SSD.

Oh there is no doubt an ssd is a luxury, not a requirement. It almost like having your own butler.

"Coleman, I'm in the mood for some Crysis 3. Could you get that up and running for me".

"Here you are sir".

"Thank you Coleman, I couldn't imagine having to wait like common folk. lol. And transfer those files too. I need them at once"

"Certainly sir"

It may be a luxury although after you get your first ssd it basically becomes a requirement.

Booting in 10 seconds sure amazes friends sometimes, which is a plus.

Besides all the other bells and whistles such as it being quiet, fast, small, etc.

Also durable, shock resistant.

Since everyone has pretty much explained them both very well, I'll tell what you should do with them.

For your Operating System, get a 120GB or 128GB SSD, put some important programs you're going to use on there.

For intense writing, because a lot of writing does wear down the SSD, get a HDD. Movies, fraps, music, some games etc.
