Hey guys, I gonna upgrade either cpu or gpu after xmas. just want to see where you think I'll get the most bang for my buck first. My goal is to run Star Citizen eventually.

I'm probably gonna have around $300 to spend. I've been looking at either an 8320 or I5 4690K on the cpu side. and the R9 270, (need a psu if I go higher than 270) currently have a cx430. or waiting until the 960 comes out.

My current system:

Phenom II x4 945

650 TI 2GB

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 945 GPU: Radeon R9 270 MOBO: Biostar A780L3C RAM: 4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3 1333mhz HDD: 350GB WD Caviar PSU: Corsair GS600 KB: Razer Blackwidow Elite MOUSE: Corsair M65 RGB

Honestly, both need upgrading, but that 240 is going to tie your system down like a brick to balloons.

So GPU, and OC that CPU, that puppy should be able to clock fairly well. If you're lucky you might get 4Ghz.

What 240?

In order to upgrade to a new cpu you would need a motherboard with the same socket as the cpu.  So there's another $70-150 right there.

The gpu would be my first upgrade and overclock that cpu until you have enough money for a new cpu/mobo.

Would you consider selling your current parts before buying new ones?

Yes, eBay has the best exposure, and you should probably price to sell.

If you can scrape up at least 100$ from that you can probably get a Pent K, Z97 board, and a decent GPU.

Now, normally I wouldn't recommend a pent K for SC, and it might not be much of an upgrade, but you'll have accomplished one upgrade and will have another path immediately queued up with an i5 or i7 being a future option.
