What is the difference between dvi and display port?

And if I were to use a dvi connector with a display port to dvi adapter would I still get the limitations from display port like the capability of 144hz?

When combining / converting between standards you generally get the performance of the one that plugs into the motherboard, that's how USB to PS2 adapters get the n-key rollover.

What is the difference between dvi and display port?

=> 1. DisplayPort has wider bandwidth that can support up to 4K@60hz, which DVI couldn't

     2. DVI generally doesn't carry audio, while DisplayPort can.

And if I were to use a dvi connector with a display port to dvi adapter would I still get the limitations from display port like the capability of 144hz?

=> From a wider bandwidth device to downscale, I think you could still get 144Hz

=> (update) sry can't get 144Hz, but somehow I find one that can support 120hz

(Actually I really don't like ____ to ____ adapter, usually cause spending money and confusing)

If you use a passive adapter between DisplayPort and DVI you'll be limited to 1080p at 60Hz.  It will also only work in one direction (DisplayPort output to DVI monitor), it won't work the other way around.

To get 144Hz from this kind of configuration, either from a dual-link DVI output to DisplayPort input, or from DisplayPort output to dual-link DVI input) you would need a signal converter box (active adapter).
