Hi all,

I'm looking for some NAS software that runs in either Windows 7 or a Linux distribution so that I can still run other programs on that computer. I'm trying to use my current computer (as I'm building a new one) as a render farm/NAS/external display for X-Plane. Blender and X-Plane run in both Windows and Linux so I'm able to use both. So far the only NAS software I can find run as entire operating systems, so I wouldn't be able to install and run other programs from what I can see.

Regards,

Kieran

I'm not a big fan of running a NAS in a VM (although I am guilty of it), but it sounds like you would want something like Proxmox. You could make a NAS4free/FreeNAS/OpenMediaVault/... VM and either give it a raid controller or one or multiple partitions to it for storage. You make other VM(s) to run whatever else you want.
