Question regarding possibly low PPD

Go to solution Solved by tobben,

But I run this OC when I play games, and never once had it crashed. I even pulled it down 15 MHz, and same thing is happening. I've had multi-hour gaming sessions at +170, so it seems strange it's crashing still at +155...

the load from a gaming session and the load put on your gpu from folding,

is entirely different. Gaming or stress testing stable doesn't guarantee

it will be folding stable. You are running a pretty aggressive overclock.

If your gpu was the problem, then surely you would see highly

irregular load and failing wu's. If you don't, well it's probably running

fine.

So I just started F@H, instead of studying for finals (pfft, finals), and I was talking to my friend about it and he thought my PPD for my GPU (gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gaming) was low (around 78,500, and as of writing this it's at 30k) and I have been looking around and it seems like other 970's are getting around 280k??? I was wondering if anyone on here had some answers. I've also looked around to see if anyone else these issues and they did, but I couldn't find a clear solution to it.

F@H V7.4.4

i7-3770k @ 4400 MHz

Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gaming @ 1545MHz

GeForce 344.75 (prefer max performance)

CPU usage pinged at 99-100%

GPU usage jumps from 91-100%

Not sure what else would help clarify this situation, but i'll be happy to post any other information you guys want tomorrow after noon central time.

Edit 1: Potentially stupid question, would network speed effect PPD at all?

Edit 2: Problem solved! Thanks to everyone for helping!

Network does not affect PPD.

What we need to know is what Core and Project. First off, it is normal for PPD to fluctuate, esp if you using system while Folding. And some WU's will only net small amounts, these are the "hard" WU's. Also to note, you need to complete 10 WU's before you are eligible for the Quick Return Bonus which is where you can really make up some points - you get bonus points the quicker you return a WU. So make sure you also have a passkey - required to qualify for QRB's.

I also, read that some WU are harder, and I think that first one my GPU was on was a harder one, because now it is sitting at 280k PPD, but now I have this weird issue where my my display driver continually stops working.... Is that an issue with the the driver itself? Or is that an indication my OC is too high? Because I can run games all day long and it never stops working on me.

So a few more questions, why does it seem my drivers will crash if I have my OC on, but it won't crash if I don't? Also, can GPU's run CPU cores?

How many cores are you running on your CPU when you fold?  Also F@H client will push it further than a majority of games.  Which Driver set are you running as well, that could be a factor as well.

I know w/ my 4790k I run 6 (vs the 8 it can) threads when folding my GPU's in windows 8.1 and Ubuntu

As of now, everything is how it came, so I would be assuming all 4 of my 3770k cores are folding away. GPU drivers 344.75 and I believe chipset version #9.4.0.1026? Not sure if the chipset version is right.

After a few trial and errors I found the same result as you just said. It seems as though it's running fine at +100 now, and stable. Thanks for all the help guys!  :)

Nice that you got it sorted out :)

i'm running my 970 at +100 aswell, it isn't

very willing to cooperate at anything higher

than that.

I haven't tested mine higher than +100, and I don't plan on it. I had it crashing at +135, and the difference between +100 and +whatever I could run at is not worth the trouble to me. If it's stable at +100, and I know it can't go much higher, than it'll be good enough. I may look at it again next week, but as of right now finals tend to be a little more important, haha
