Hello all,

Just this august I completed my first build with some (or so i thought) latest computer technology to make an value optimized (not really) 4K gaming rig, here are my specs:

i7 4790k

Asus maximus 7 ranger mobo

h100i

v1000 psu

and a 780ti graphics card

Asus pb287q (its a tn panel, slightly more easy to run than ips, hence gaming wasn't too bad)

Unfortunately due to my lack of appropriate research, I did not correctly assess the market and in hindsight i should've waited another month or so to complete my build because thats when the 980 was announced, i've noticed several improvements of the 980 over the 780ti, but it wasn't good enough for me to sell my 780ti for a brand new 980, but with newer titles coming out i'm worried about frame rate dips at 4k resolution. I've come up with two solutions:

1. Buy a 980 after I've saved up for a while

2. Use the money i've saved up to plan and implement a water cooling rig for all the components, i've done some calculations already the price is slightly cheaper than buying a 980.

What are your thoughts? I appreciate any and all comments, thanks

I certainly don't recommend buying a 980 when you already have a 780ti which performs almost the same. A single 980 will struggle just as much as the 780ti at 4k, only a handful of games can make use of the extra vram without being bottlenecked by the gpu at that resolution (one of these is wolfenstein the new order, but again it's just one). So that's a big nono, pure wasted money in my opinion (in fact with the money of a 780ti you could have bought 2 R9 290s and gotten 70% more performance as well as the extra vram, but I digress). I suggest you either buy a second 780ti and go for sli, or do the watercooling. The first if you want/need more perofrmance, the second if you don't.

I would wait.  Your current rig is plenty strong, and new stuff is just around the corner.

Wait until AMD releases its new 300 series.  AMD is known to be incredible at higher resolutions, so its definitely worth waiting for.  Also, there is rumored to be the 980Ti, which will be released right after AMD releases the 300s.  The 980Ti is supposed to be a whopper.

wait for the R9 390X Pirate Island or the GTX980Ti and see the benchmarks of each GPU for 1440P and 4K gaming

You'll have trouble running games at high framerates with a single 780Ti at 4K. I would recommend the PB278Q, 1440p PLS panel, instead. Alternatively sell your 780Ti and buy two 970s from that money and the money you have saved up. Watercooling looks great, but when you can't run your games properly at 4K the looks won't help much.

didn't see that you already have the monitor. Wait for the new high end cards, like the others suggested.

Personally I would wait for the new AMD 390x and the 980 ti to come out then look at the price drop in the 780 ti. My guess is they will hit the $300-$340 range. At that point I recommend buying another 780 ti instead of selling it for new cards entirely.

thing is 3GB on the 780Ti is not cut for 4K gaming anymore

which is why the new GTX cards sport 4GB and coming soon 8GB

If it was my cash , I would actually try to sell the 780ti , and than buy 2 290's, maybe even secondhand 290s.

It might be a hard card to sell since its still so expensive, but you probably break even.

But do check other comments, I myself would just never buy a 780ti, let alone start gaming in 4k, since you still pay the early adopters price , which I don't think is justifiable financially.
