So I just finished building my new computer. Finished it last night, monitor came in today. I hooked the monitor up to the computer and plugged both into the wall. Turned on the powersupply and my keyboard lights (Num, Cap, and Scroll lock) flashed on for about 1 sec then off. Then I pressed the power button on my computer and I think I heard some small pops. Nothing on monitor, no fans, nothing. One other thing is that a motherboard screw might be in there somewhere, I cant remember if I fished it out. Help?

Regards,

Jackson

Check if there are any shortage marks. It usually looks burnt. Other wise take out the motherboard from the case and check of there are any open wires. If not try to test out the power supply using a paper clip jumping the green wire to a black one to see if the psu fan spins up. Also check of that screw is what shorted something like the motherboard, graphics card or if it fell into the power supply.

Wait wait wait, I got a powersupply tester with my psu and it has a wire from 1 port to another, I just tried it, no fans. And the psu fan was up at the time I lost the screw.

Oh dear,

You know this means...

Theres one of two things that might have happened

Lets start on the bright side.

1. The PSU does not turn on without a load (some newer PSU does that to save power) You can easily get around that by plugging in a hard drive to it.

2. The screw fell into the power supply and shorted out the internal circuits and sometimes It could destroy your entire system. Motherboard, cpu, graphics card or pretty much whatever that was connected to it. (note its might happen but its unlikely that anything else is damaged)

Well, crap. Everything is unplugged except for a hdd. Just to clarify, i here no rattling in the system. Is there anything magnetic in the psu that would attract the screw?

I don't think there are any magnets in the power supply. But take out the power supply from the case and see if you hear and rattling. If not look at the motherboard and see if there is any burn marks or any other marks that is unusual.
