Need help with GPU and 4k Monitor setup

QQSB

Hello,

Thanks for the help in advance.

I have been on the fence for more than a week now. Planning on building a rig for the best gaming quility, I play most of the games.

Can't decide wether I should go for 2x GTX 980 gigabyte g1 or 2x R9 295 x2.

Heard a lot of crossfire software issues with the R9 295 x2?

Planning on using the Acer Xb280hk if I go with Nvida.

Is stuttering really going to be an issue if I don't use G-sync at 4k with 2 GPUs? Say a lot of tech reviews where the fps just goes up and down, most be some serious stuttering.

If going with AMD I am thinking of either the curved 34UM97 Linus had in his video or any recommendations?

Are the 4ks at 60HZ really going to bother me when playing fps games vs 144HZ?

How noticeable are the resolutions for the 2k monitors (such as Asus Rog Swift) vs real 4k UHD monitors (Acer xb280hk, LG 34UM97, etc)?

The rest parts of my rig are:

Case: Comos II

Motherboard: Maximus VII formula

CPU: 4790K

Power: EVGA supernova 1600 platinum for R9 295x2 or 1200 for GTX 980.

SSD: 850 128GB for system, and 840 1TBx2 for storage (from my laptop)

Ram: I have 16 GB of ddr3 ram card that I took out from my MSI gaming laptop after I burned my laptop. No idea of the brand or anything else other than their size. Would I be likely to bottleneck my rig  with these ram cards?

Thank you for whoever will be reading and responding to this.

Best regards,

Ok this is not a fanboy opinion....

The R9 295x2 is definitely faster, there won't be many crossfire isues seeming they are fixed with th Oates OMega driver.

Currently it is a fact that the r9 295x2 is the fastest gpu on the planet.

(Please if you have info the 980 is faster I would love to hear it as I am deciding as well)

Thanks for replying,

Yeah I agree that the R9 295x2 is the single fastest card on the planet.

But two GTX 980 beats a single R9 295x2 on most reviews.

And I am curious how R9 295x2 would perform if I use two of them?

Best,

Generally speaking xFire or SLI more then 3 cards have diminishing returns. And 2 R9 295x2 is a QuadFire.

Also wondering if I will be getting a lot of stuttering using AMD cards vs Nivida with their G-sync monitors.

Depends on what games you play. MicroShuttering for both parties are pretty much gone at this point, its more about the SLI and xFire profiles and who gets those out faster that may make or break the deal. G-sync is good if you can't hit the 60 or 120-144Hz refresh rate of the monitor.

8GB Vram is it really necessary?

To drive 4k res? I would think you would benefit from more vRam

So G-sync would be unneccessary for my build?

Really depends on what you think, Does screen tearing bother you?

I can handle it once in a while but not every other minute.

Then you might benefit from gsync.

This should help

Sigh first of all... AMD's R9 295x2 is nothing but a R9 290X with 2 Hawaii XT chips on it. The 8GB DDR5 VRAM are shared, that means each chip has 4GB on its own for usage.

When you look at the video they CF basically 4 R9 290X because this is what a R9 295x2x2 setup is.

There you have benchmarks and the full article of the GTX980 in 2way and 3way SLI. The GTX980 is faster even with AMD's new OMEGA driver. And besides that the GTX980 has the better OC potential.

If you look for the best price to performance ratio a R9 295x2 is a fine choice, because it is a good video card.

You are right,

But since I will be using 2 cards either AMD or Nvida, wouldn't 4 R9 290 be faster than 2 980?

Yes a R9 295x2x2 setup would be faster than a 3 way GTX980 SLI in theory all nice and shiny and for benchmarks.

In reality 4 way CF and SLI leads to some scaling and therefore performance issues in some games. And if I´d go for a R9 295x2x2 setup I would make sure that I have at least a 1200 Watts PSU and an X99 CPU with native 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes.

Best scaling you get is a 2way CF/SLI. Best case for 4K is a 3way CF/SLI. The 4rth card (I know R9 295x2 has 2 chips) is usually not worth it. And I was never a fan of 2 chips on one PCB because they usually suffer from a lower OC potential, because the manufacturer has to keep the chips and the cards hpases reasonable in its power consumption.

Right now I´m thinking about adding a third GTX980 to my system. But more for the looks and sheer greeds. I use 1440p and the 980 2way SLI gives me ULTRA settings already.
