GTX 980 SLI

Go to solution Solved by Real_PhillBert,

Do it! I hope he has a 4K monitor.

The specific model is not that big of a deal, pick whichever he thinks looks best. I am partial to MSI, EVGA, ASUS, and Gigabyte; in no particular order.

My 4790K @ 4.8GHz and my Strix 980 only pulls ~350W max from my PSU so you can easily run two on a 750W.

So my friend is looking into getting a GTX 980 SLI, and he wants to know wich one of the kinda 30models there are to get?

And can somebody give me benchmarks for it too, because he wants some.

He would also like to know if he is fine with the EVGA SuperNova G2 850W.

And he would like to know if he should go for the 780Ti instead?

Thx in advance.

He should stick with the 980

The model really does not matter, get the one he likes the look of best

That power supply is plenty

Here are some benchmarks http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-980-sli-review,1.html

I would say get 2 970's since the performance increase between these is small but the price difference is huge.

I prefer Asus and Gigabyte cards since they are dead silent also the psu is fine

Do you have benchmarks for me to show him between SLI980 and SLI970 could be I confince him to save some money

PLEASE TAKE THIS OUT OF YOU HEAD FOREVER. 970 surely is a good price to performance GPU but it's comparison with 980 doesn't makes any sense. Ofc if you overclock 970 you will the power of 980. But what about the overclocked 980???

Thats true I was so or so thinking of suggsesting him 2x980's cause he has the money for it and they will scale much better also in 1440p and he is going to get the Swift so I hope he has fun with it. Thx for the advice.

Thx. I think I am going to suggsest him the Gygabyte ACX2 SC one.

Also jsut cause I see it. My friend is still deciding between a i7-5930k and a i7-4790k. And he is Gaming alot and sometimes doing some C# programming. So I told him the i7-4790k is a awesome CPu, so he should get that for the money and if he wants upgrade when skylake comes out. But then he says he wants the i7-5930k for future proof till skylake comes out or abit longer, and I told him thats just dumb. So I try to find people having the 4790k and wanna know how it is in games and such. He is mainly playing CSGO,LoL,Arma3,Insurgency and a whole fuck of games (ofc Bf4 too :P)

The 4790K is one of the best CPUs for gaming as it is already pretty overkill, especially for games like CSGO, LoL, and Insurgency.

If he mostly does gaming, I would solidly recommend it. The 5930K is great but its almost double the price, and then you have to buy into X99 and DDR-4 which will drive up the cost of the machine a fair amount.

I use mine for ~60% gaming and 40% CAD modeling and analysis.

BTW is it true that you only have 16lanes meaning when you go SLI you have 8x/8x?

Yep that is true. But a PCI-e 3.0 at x8 is plenty for a GPU these days. It is not a slowdown.

Dont quote me on this but the 4790k has 30~PCIE lanes so it cant run 16x/16x it will run at 8x/8x. The performance difference between 16x and 8x is negligible tho :)

Sorry but that is not the case. The Z97 chipset supports one PCI-e 3.0 @ x16 or 2x PCI-e 3.0 @ x8 or one PCI-e 3.0 @ x8 and 2x PCE-e 3.0 @ x4.

It's either PCIe 3.0 16, 28 or 40 native lanes. Only Intel's enthusiast CPUs have more than 16 natice PCIe 3.0 lanes.

Well that entirely depends on what kind of performance you need.

By the time SLI 970's are beginning to have unsatisfactory performance, SLI 980's won't be much better.  Unless you're going to keep those cards for ~5 years I think it's usually better to buy mid-high range for multi-GPU set ups.  But that's just my preference I suppose, I may replace my GPU's more frequently than other people.

5930k is a bust imo get the 5820k if you're going with 2011 socket.

Dual 980s is pretty beast but they don't pull much power my rig 5820k oc and dual 980s only peaks at 620w so 850 has plenty of headroom.

Depends on what you are doing. I love that CPU because I´ll go 3way and then you benefit from the 40 native PCIe lanes and besides that most 5930K OC further. I can push mine up to 4.7GHz. Most 5820K don´t do that. Though the 5820K is a nice CPU theres no doubt about it :).

I'm running 4.7 on my 5820k right now and did get a fairly stable 4.8 except the voltage was at 1.45+ so I backed it down a little. but idk maybe I won the lotto or something

Well 4way SLI on a 5820K?

And yes you´ve won the silicon lottery for sure but 1.45+ V even under a good watercooling, that´s a bit questionable. Did you do a 24h stress test? Cause I would be interested in the highest temps per core you had. And how did you OC, just raising the multiplier or did you work with the BLCK as well?
