I would go with z97 because you have a whole range of intel CPUS you can upgrade to like from a pentium to a  4690k to a 4790k

[CPU] i7 4790K OC [CPU Cooler] H100i [GPU] Evga GTX 980 SuperClocked [Ram] Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 1866 mhz [PSU] Cooler Master 1000w Silent Pro [storage] 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro, 1TB Seagate SSHD, 1 TB WD Blue 4 TB Seagate Nas. [Motherboard] Msi Z97 Gaming 5 [Case] Phantom 410 Red [sound] Onboard ALC 1150 [Headphones] Sennheiser HD 558 [Keyboard] Razer BlackWidow Chroma  [Mouse] Razer Deathadder Chroma [Mouse] Razer FireFly [Monitor] Asus MG278Q

G3258/i3?

That'd work, but he/she wouldn't get the best performance off the bat. Definitely a better upgrade path, though.

OP: Best upgrade path would be a h97 board (or z97 but it's pretty worthless until you get a new i5 (4690k or whatever) with an i3 or Pentium g3258. As far as best performance right off the bat, you're probably better off with the FX-6300.

Yes the i5 starts pretty high but the pentium is pretty good as well and you have a much better upgrade path to go.

As for the H97...

Well its not good for upgrading. to an 4690k or 4790k

Also You cant overclock on those boards and the Pentium G3258 is a hell of an overclocker.

You kinda losing out.

Can I update the bios, so I could overclock a  i5 on it?

Nope. z87/z97 is required in order to overclock K-SKU motherboards. Like others have said, z97 is better if you intend on upgrading to an i5 in the future (near, really. Else, it's not all that worth it.)

well my intend would be to get the newest chipset in a year or two. But would a g3258 handle an oc'd 270?
