Easily the R9 290 or GTX970

 

which ever is cheaper

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

What do you play?
If you play games like Farcry4 go with Nvidia card to get better performens
Do you play Battlefield 4 go with AMD to use mantle.

Do you play all kind of games? Take the 290 or 970 where you get a game with it or a great warranty :)

Both are great cards but look at feature you can get, do you want mantle and freesync (some day) or do you want g-sync and shadowplay? 
And look after the game you are playing what card is best there :)

The 290/280x and 780/770 respectively trade blows depending on the situation.

The 970 is better than the 290/780.
