SSD Boot Drive

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

Hi I want to know if i can put a os on a ssd and completely block anything else from getting onto the drive so I cant get any viruses on the drive. Updates aren't much of a thing on windows 7 so im not worried about that. If there is any sort of other recommendations id be happy to here them. Thanks

Hello Azcy63 and welcome to Linus Tech Tips forum :)

You should have no problems installing your OS on the SSD and directing all other installs on other drives. unfortunately, all installed programs and games have to make small entries in the registry of the OS which ahve to be installed on the same drive as the OS. Furthermore, it is recommended that all drivers and firmware is installed in the same place as the OS. You could limit all other installations by simply point the default installation location to another drive.

Common thing is to route libraries and such to HDD. There are ways to route even your user data folder to HDD but I would highly advice against it. In situation where something happens and you need to restore windows, any such configuration is lost and your user account is basicly unusable. If you are fine with extra work when such things happen or are really wanting just basic windows experience, then here's the guide for it: http://www.starkeith.net/coredump/2009/05/18/how-to-move-your-windows-user-profile-to-another-drive/

Btw. All updates from Microsoft are as safe as the OS itself. If you are fine installing OS, then you are fine to install any updates to it. Besides, they don't use that much of space.
