I think of it this way.

the Titans extra 10% would definitely help to drive a 2560x1600 display, but for $1000 it's not worth it.

the Titan can't drive a full surround setup with ideal fps better than something like a gtx 780 or even gtx 770 sli.

now that we have the GTX 780 the Titan is just for e-peen.

If, by some absurd miracle, you intend to get and afford a 4K monitor, that's when you will want the Titan. 6GB of VRAM will make a difference there more than anything else, or you intend to do CUDA rendering (as others have said), then it's worth it.

If neither of those things apply to you, don't bother and get the 780 imo.

I sold my titan for 780 sli so ye lol

I have a surround setup, but I didn't really notice a difference using the 3gb compared to 6gb, all my games work fine, EXCEPT crysis 3, I cannot use 8x cxsaa or w/e the highest AA is, but it's fine, I can still use like the second highest AA without problems

What about two 780 SLI vs 1 Titan? for gaming 1440p max single monitor. Some guys tell me they rather have a single gpu because it's more stable than two. Is this a valid point? I've seen plenty of videos with 780 SLI and they seem fine.

SLI 780s would be a better solution for that use case, but most recommend not to SLI because of many bugs/issues that go along with it (i.e. half the time your experience is diminished for paying more). A single 780 is great for a single 1440p monitor, and if you really need more power you can buy a second. Once you have a top tier GPU like the 780 (for 1440p of course) I would recommend spending what you would have spent on a second 780 on other components (e.g. SDD, fans, CPU cooler, CPU, case, HDDs, monitor, keyboard, mouse, sound card, mic, headphones, speakers, desk, chair, etc...).

Well running minesweeper, minecraft and chess titans at the same time. Some people dont know this but chess titans is much better with some titans as the name suggests. On a serious note only for rendering, gaming performance is the same.

One problem with SLI that has not been specifically named is micro-stuttering. That is the apparent "jerkiness"  in the monitor display even though the average frames per second over time suggests there should be a smooth visual rendering. For some the effect can be so distracting it outweighs the supposed advantages of multiple gpu setups.
