Using Rufus to create bootable USB

Since i'm going to install Windows 8.1 from a USB I found Rufus. What settings do I use on it and do I change it to GPT partition, since my MSI Z97 G45 supports it?

iirc the official Windows (7) USB/DVD download tool works with Windows 8.1, so why not use that?

I'm not sure since there's stuff going on about partitioning it to GPT, because of UEFI.

IMO UEFI is a pain in the ass to deal with in some situations, just stick with legacy and do things the way you're used to doing them. Not just for making the bootable USB but for other things as well

I'm really confused, since someone told me that since the mobo is UEFI there's no legacy...?

There always is legacy support. Unless you have a shitty OEM motherboard which quite often locks MBR completely out on some occasions, you should be able to install using both legacy (MBR) and GPT.

 

Either way, GPT is superior to MBR as it supports storage sizes over 2TB (MBR limit) and creates a second copy of the boot record in case the first one gets overwritten. (I.e., you might end up with a disk in RAW format, as the file system has gone missing)

I really want to know how to install Windows 8.1 with GPT partition for UEFI. Anyway how do I go from legacy to UEFI?

If you create the bootable USB with the GPT option, it should automatically install as GPT when you install Windows. I'd recommend wiping the HDD completely before installing, though.

Guess it can't be that difficult I'll just wipe the drive if I have to start over. I'm using an SSD for the OS along with a HDD for other stuff.
