Samba isn't very cross platform as is, and windows shared folders often slow to a crawl (Have been doing this since XP for me) after a while of use.

If you asked me, I think doing FTP would be better, as far as I know all modern platforms can handle FTP much better than SMB.

That's what I thought. Is there a way to integrate FTP into windows explorer, for example have a silent server running on all machines, and in Windows Explorer, make it browsable like Windows Explorer? I want to make it as easy as possible for my family to share GB's of photo's and what not, and just browse for files on other computers in the network.

Windows Explorer has the option to add FTP server folders to it. Using FileZilla, it's possible to get the URL path to put into Windows Explorer.
