good 250$ router

Go to solution Solved by Berkut99,

I wouldn't spend the money. I'd do research into your current router to see if adjusting some settings would work first. Otherwise I'd be afraid you'd just be spending money on something that won't improve your infrastructure. :(

My family has started to get extremely pissed at me when i'm downloading my steam or origin games and  can't don't want to limit the speed. So we are in the market for a 5 ghz router that is cheaper than the rogers 5 ghz router a 250$ Canadian. So far i am thinking of the Lynksis WRT1900AC. Do you guys recommend anything.

I have the WRT1900AC which I bought to punch through the crowded wireless environment of my apartment complex and it's definately got power behind it. It's quite reliable as well, I don't think I've had to restart it once in the six months or so I've had it.

But it's not going to improve your throughput from the wall. It's not going to keep the internet from bogging down when you're downloading games. It still splits that bandwidth across all active devices.

really. But if i have a 5 ghz wireless card wont it not crowd the bus or something like that (have no idea)

It still will somewhat. It sounds like your bottleneck might simply your internet connection if your family is having issues with your game downloading. A faster router, when paired with 5GHz -AC wireless card will improve intranet throughput (that is, the speed between devices within your home) and will allow faster file access from device to device in your own network, but not improve internet throughput.

Could a 35mb/s download speed be the bottleneck or not?

Maybe; it depends on who's downloading what, how big the files/streaming packets are, and how often their downloading. There's also QoS options and packet prioritization to consider. In that case you could probably limit your own download speeds and if your current router doesn't have the option to let you do that then a new router might very well be in order--though pretty much every router I know of, even the cheapest ones, give you the ability to do this. There's probably also a way to do this through Windows as well, though I wouldn't know how.

To head off any questions though, unfortunately I wouldn't know how to do this through your router. The only thing I've ever needed to do was to modify DMZ settings for my PS3 to operate at one point, and even then there wasn't any noticable quality difference to count that as a success on my end.

So sorry as a round up (i'm sort of a noob) should i get a new router or not?

I agree with this statement.

@Killswitch49 how many family members are sharing the Internet? What kinds of things are they trying to do when you are downloading that causes them frustration? First thing I would do is enable QoS on your current router, test that for a few days or a week, and see how it goes.

You can also limit your download speed using third party programs, but I would check out other things first. If you enable QoS, downloads pretty much always get lowest priority, so that should solve your issues. Depending on your specific model of router, you may need to custom program the QoS settings (You should be able to find a guide by googling "<router model> QoS setup guide")
