Hi I have just ordered a new cpu cooler as my 7700k pc shutdown because the cpu was too hot. I have taken off the stock cooler but there is excess residue from the old cpu cooler. Can you just use a cloth or towel to get this off? (there is little left which is why it shutdown due to overheating) or do you have to but a specialist product ? cpu cooler link is here:

Yes, try to use 100% isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth (or toilet paper as Linus does, IIRC).

btw- Will my cpu be damaged in anyway as it just shutdown and when I had a look at the cpu barely any thermal paste was on- I had just ordered my new cpu cooler

Toilet paper is okay, but not the best. If you're going to use it, use a thick type. Also, it could have been caused by thermal throttling or just a crash. Try cleaning off the thermal paste and then applying more similar to the shape of a grain of rice. Can be bigger or smaller, but I wouldn't recommend it. So no, your CPU is most likely okay. If it continues to shut down or not start at all with my method, it might be a bad CPU.

Well, ive done it using 70% alcohol (Didn't have any 99% laying around) and a standard coffee filter which worked great.

Well, that your CPU did shutdown is bad, but hey at least it protected itself.

You most likely will have no damage at all, but in the long run it will not be a good idea to let it run so hot.

I forgot about coffee filters, they work just as good as microfibre cloths.

Yea, but at least they tend to not leave any fibres unlike what toilet paper does.

Yeah I bought the pc as buidling it would be more expensive then the plan was to upgrade it- My new cpu cooler is in the mail being delievered (shadow rock bk010 be quiet!). I knew that when it shut itself down it was the cpu. Will it be ok in long run? (planning to have it another 2 years and then I will get an i7 or whatever cpu that is better in 2 years).

Will kitchen paper be better or screen wipes as they are anti static (have a 27 inch acer). Stupid amazon delivery it is estimated next week. running on a shitty i3 laptop

It is a good cpu- it has been running 6 months on stock cooler though- my cpu cooler was delayed and it has finally being dispatched by amazon's stupid delivery. (cpu cooler: bk010 be quiet!)

If you change the cooler out and it fixes the shutdowns, then yes.

But unless youre overclocking then the stock cooler should work just fine.

Could you check if youre overclocking with out current cooler? If you are then leave it stock and you should be up and running until your new cooler arrives.

No I am not oc'ing at the minute. the 7700k is good it boots up at 3.5ghz and then boosts to 3.8ghz when playing games or powerful programs. this is what it was set to when I got it. I am not oc'ing in furture to keep temps down as I am upgrading my card to a gtx 760 (evga or msi) and want to keep temps down when cpu is under load from games like metro last light redux or evil within

Then I suggest just testing it with the stock cooler and using it until the new one arrives and switch them with the same method as before.

Can you just use a cloth or towel to get this off? (there is little left which is why it shutdown due to overheating) or do you have to but a specialist product ? cpu cooler link is here:

You can use 70% iysopropyl alcohol otherwise known as rubbing alcohol, the percentage doesn't matter much but the higher the better, even lower is fine, you should be able to get this at your local pharmacy or do a quick search on the internet.

You could also just wipe it off dry, preferably with a micro fiber cloth, like the kind used for sun glasses not really the other kind, toilet paper can also work but beware of the tissue particles that will break off, you don't want this on your CPU socket.

Looking further into your situation, it seems all you needed really was a fresh thermal paste application and probably clean out the CPU fan, but since you already ordered the other cooler that's also fine. Just make sure to apply the thermal paste correctly, maybe look at a youtube video or 2 if you're not sure how.

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

the problem is the thermal paste is nearly all off which is what caused the shutdown- to give you an idea my pc stock cooler is off, the backplate is off in prep for the be quiet! cooler to arrive. I am not risking it as I am upgrading the gpu to a 760 which will cost 180 and I don't exactly want to pay 100 for a replacement 7700k

Yeah I think the "pea method" is going to be ok because looking closer at the cpu I can tell that the company I bought it off used the pea method and it looks like it spread it pretty well (corner to corner almost with a few edges missed). Buying this pc was cheaper than building it so upgrading it will be slightly cheaper (evga supernova g2 750w and a gtx 760 which along with my cpu will pull 50fps on most new titles like metro last light redux, alien isolation and evil within).
