Did viruses decrease my hard drive's capacity?

My young sister had recently found that  her maximum hard drive space had halved from the original space there was. From 4tb to 2tb. When looking through her programs, I had found many ad-ware programs that  probably came with many viruses.

Is it possible that viruses had decreased her max hard drive space? If so, can we get it back?

One things I can think of is install support for up to 2tb such as when I tried installing Win 8 on my 3tb hard drive it partitioned it into 2tb and 1tb before I could install, but if it used to show 4tb then I'm not sure what changed. I would just back up whatever you need and do a fresh install, it solves most problems.

It sounds like the space was reduced by viruses, use WizTree to see which folders on the hard drive are using the most space. If they're programs, you can probably uninstall them. If they really want to hang around, there are lots of free antiviruses online. Personally, I use AVG and Malwarebytes Antimalware.

Hey sgsgamer,

Is that a internal or an external drive?
It is possible that a virus can do that. It is also possible that a program that your sister is running writes a lot of temp and cache data without deleting it. You can run the disk clean up tool built in in windows and to a defrag.
Also, if you post a screenshot of the drive in disk management, we might be able to give you more advice.
