So, I am installing Ubuntu 14.04 on a Clients old, used-to-be Vista machine. The install goes well, it throws no errors, and everything's ready to roll. Now, I eject the disk, Press enter, it restarts, and it dumps me into the login screen. I proceed to type in the passward, and press enter. The screen locks up, and after around a minute, it turns black. After around 5 minutes of that, it prints something similar to "[bug] CPU#1 locked up for 24s!", and then after around another minute, it goes haywire and white lines appear all across the screen. I restart, and the same thing happens all over again.

Any suggestions? I installed the 64-bit version, but the client's computer had 3 gigs of memory, so I don't see anything wrong with it.

Please do help me, I'm at my wit's end here.

Try re-installing and see if the problem persists

How would you reinstall? Again, I can't get past the login screen.

just boot from the installation disk that you used to install Ubuntu originally

So you forgot your password that's been set during installing and you can't get into the desktop?

If it is,You should format the hdd and clean install again...If not..then I'm confused...

Haywire and white line appear on screen could be memory or graphics card problem, better replace either one to check which one is the troublemaker.
