Fx6300 or Pentium G3258 for Budget Gaming?

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

Do the FX 6300 and the 8320 have similar performance? or is there a massive difference in performance?

in regards to gaming, not much...the FX-6300 is likely to overclock better...i would still pair it with the M5A97 for best results and reliability.

gaming with AMD FX cpu's 99% of the time you'll be limited by the ''per core'' performance of the chip and not the multi-threaded performance, so in short a 3 modules vs 4 modules cpu's won't change much for most games...and when it does you'd need an higher-end GPU to notice it.

This shows the prices of the bundles. Would an Fx perform well with an Asus M5A97?

yes, 149$ for the FX-8320 and M5A97 is a good deal, what GPU you plan to pair to it?

the MSI 970A-G46 should not even be offered in combo with the FX 8 core..don't go any cheaper than M5A97

I already own the Radeon R9 270 by Sapphire; I have not used it at all.

Too bad there is no 860K bundle. Still saying the 8320 is a pretty poor system for it's price. Plus the price of the aftermarket cooler isn't factored in.

You might get good value in absolute terms, but in reality it's pretty dim. The 860K will probably not do much worse in most games, especially not with a 270.

So why pay more, even if it's a "good deal".

$150,- thats indeed a nice deal.

M5A97 wont be record breaking for overclocking, but still it should run the cpu just fine.

FX8320 is still not a bad cpu guys, if you pair it with a nice midrange gpu, its still totaly fine.

FX8 core cpu´s are very good if you do more things besides gaming, like Virtualization, 3D rendering and what not.

Sure for pure gaming intel haswell i5´s are better sure no question.

But for $150,- its a good deal.

i have a FX8350 with 7870GHz which is similar to the setup you are looking at.

And it basicly still plays most games totaly fine. except Acassin Creed Unity. that game is only playable on low settings.

it's a good match i could recommend GPU's as high as the R9 280X to go with an overclocked FX CPU, the FX-8320 at stock settings will feed your 270 all it can handle.

149$ for the 8 core FX and a descent motherboard is a good price to me, + the user plan to use a 270 on it and the stock heatsink is fine to use on the FX-8320 at stock...he won't need to overclock it since he is using a lower end GPU.

FX-6300 is great for the price. Or you can try FX-8320E (95W, really awesoem OC with low voltage - up to 4700 MHz with around 1.44V - its aprox. compared as 1.3V at Intel chips)

CPU collection: i7-6700K, 2x-i7-5960x, i7-3930K, i7-4770K, i7-3770K, i7-2600K, i7-980X  AMD PII X4 965 BE C2, x4 965 BE C3, X4 970 BE, x4 975 BE, x4 980 BE, X6 1090T BE, x6 1100T BE, FX-8120 95W, FX-8120 12W, FX-8150, FX-4300, FX-6300, FX-8300, FX-8320, FX-8350, FX-8370E, FX-8370, FX-9370, FX-9590, A8-3870K, A8-5600K, A10-6800B, A10-6800K, A10-7700K, A10-7850K, A10-7870K, Athlon x4 860K, Athlon 5150. I will most likely go for the 6300 then.

I wasn't saying it's a bad deal. Also, pretty sure even the 8320 will have a loud stockfan. 160-170W system wattage (just CPU benching) under cinebench11.5, compared to ~85W of the Intel i5.

Those deals make it very cheap though. At those prices i'd say for the 6300 instead and throw the extra dollars towards a cooler.

130$ for a 6300 and motherboard. How the fuck are they still making money. Courtesy of Foxconn i guess :/

i agree...a 30$ hyper 212 should be considered as a future upgrade for better acoustics and temps (it's a good thing to have one, and this is true with every CPU's...the stock heatsinks are always louder)

I used the stock amd cooler for a year, and i can tell you, that the performance of it isn´t that bad.

But the noise is just terrible lol.

The record fan speed i reached with that stock cooler was allmost 8000 rpm. lol. Its like a Honda V-tec.

also i would just add a quick note for the OP: The stock heatsink that comes with the FX-6300 is FAR cheaper than the ones that they include with the FX-8320, so you should indeed consider to invest some money on a cheap aftermarket heatsink for it.

I used Gelid Tranquillo at FX-6300 and with decent OC (4.5 GHz 1.4V) no problems.

I wouldn't. Either go budget with the 860K, or get something proper like an i3-43xx or i5-44xx.

Seeing as how he's running a R9 270X pretty much any chip from the 760k and up will push it to its performance barrier. I'd go with the FX-8320 due to it completely triumphing the i3 in threaded workloads. Software that typically requires fewer cores doesn't work to complete a large task to begin with. On the other hand if you're like me a use software such as Handbrake to encode HD movies for playing on my Wii then the FX-8320 is a no brainer.

Hello, I might build my first pc this week and was wondering what CPU to purchase. My budget right now is 350$ because I have already purchased a GPU. I have heard great things about Intel's Pentium G3258 which is a Dual-Core 3.2 Ghz Processor and is 100$ with an MSI Z97 PC Mate Mobo. I have also heard some great things about AMD's fx6300 6core 3.5Ghz Processor that is 130$ with an Asus M5A97 R2.0 Mobo. My question is What CPU should I buy for gaming? I need one that would last me quite a while. I have unfortunately heard that games are starting to require more than 2 cores like Far Cry 4. I have an R9 270 Oc with boost GPU and will be getting 8gb of Ram, A Corsair 230T case. 500 or 600w Corsair PSU, a Seagate Barracuda TB HDD.

for a budget go with the athlon 750k / 850k quad core and oc's like a bat outa hell

Project black out: cpu: athlon x4 750k @4.7ghz, Mobo: asrock fm2+ a55 vg3+, ram: 1x 8gb hyperx 1866mhz, video card: 1x saphire radeon r9 270x, Storage: 1tb hdd ssd in the future,  cooling: 2 noctua 120mm fans 1 on rad one front intake.
