test benches

so i hear a lot about test benches and all that good stuff but whats their real function besides part testing? can you use them as say a dumby computer to see how well virus software removes viruses?

You can do anything you want. It's essentially a computer that is easily accessible with no case.

It's just an 'open' computer case that makes it easier to swap parts / tinker.

Well, it's called a testbench, so I'd assume you'd do any kind of testing you'd wanna do on it. But I wouldn't consider using or calling a 'testbench' your main computer.
