Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum! I have decided to join this forum because I really like and appreciate the way Linus and his team review and explain hardware related stuff.

I am Dutch so please don't mind my incorrect grammar.

Recently I have upgraded my 2 GTX 580's to 2 GTX 980's.

I have moved one of my old GTX 580's to and old pc I have. This is the first time I've run into a bottleneck.

My GTX 580 get's around 30-40 fps in BF3 on medium (1080p) where it should be a lot more even with one GTX 580.

Specs on this old system are:

GTX 580

Core 2 quad Q9450 (can't overclock it since I can't get it stable no matter what...)

Nforce 780I SLI mobo

4gb OCZ reaper ddr2 800mhz

OCZ vertex 60gb

Seagaten 7200RPM 32mb 1TB

PSU: Coolermaster blahblah 850W

I don;t think the bottleneck is the first gen PCI 16x. I think it's the CPU. The first Gen PCI slot doesn't cost me that much frames I think.

But the deal is... now I'm afraid I'm not getting full potential on my high end system.

here are the specs of my high end system

MOBO: Asus rampage 3 Xtreme

GPU: 2x MSI GTX 980 4G in SLI

CPU: Core I7 980X @4ghz

PSU: Antec quaddro 1200w

RAM: 12gb Corsair dominator GT DDR3 @2000mhz

and fcourse I got some SSD's and HDD's which are not important for this question.

I got a firestrike score of 18442 and a 3Dmark11 score of 19155

My real question is how much better would my GPU perform with a new CPU like the Haswell 5820k.

I saw some benchmarks lately where some games got doubled FPS with a newer CPU.

Difference between a PCI 2.0 16x lane and a PCI 3.0 lane are minimal so that won't be a bottleneck I believe.

Thank you all!

In order to play bf3 smooth you will need atleast 8gb of ram. That's your problem here the cpu is a small bottleneck but you should get atleast 60 fps with 8gb of ram.

Oh and I'm also Dutch so if you need more help just send me a DM in dutch.

Hey Thanks Lani! I appreciate that.

So I've just tested something on my high end system.

I play bf4 with +- 140fps but when I put my resolution or overal quality lower I still get the same fps... So this does mean my high end system is bottlenecked by the CPU right?

Still.. none of the cores are used 100% while gaming.

Why does an awesome chip like 980x have 2 be a bottleneck?
