Router Help

So I am currently looking into getting a new router and I just wanted to hear your thoughts. What do you think is the best internet solution? And also what is an access point? Is it just a router?

Access point is basically synonymous in general to people at this point (though they're not necessarily the same thing.) To tl;dr it: an access point is, as the name implies, a point that users can access to connect to and access the internet. Many routers also broadcast an access point at the same time. Either way, we can't give you a certain answer unless you tell us what you need the router for. Are you doing something very intensive, like Linus' workstations at their workplace (running 10-GigE/each)? Are you just browsing Facebook? Are you using it for local media servers? etc.
