I'm writing a current topic paper on a controversial topic, and I just so happened to be assigned internet privacy. So what do you guys think about the evidence that the NSA without a doubt is looking through peoples personal emails, texts and maybe even listening to phone calls. Do you think this is wrong, or can be justified because it will end up protecting the people of the US. If you guys could give me just a couple sentence on what your views are that would be great!

For me it can't be justified because it's invasion of privacy, and old detective work to find criminals is needed like Wendell said, I'm cutting a lot of his words so I would recommend watching the Tek probably any episode about NSA and encryption and ISPs.

Of corse it's wrong. We have laws and rules for a reason, but those don't apply to our own government. The most stupid argument that I've ever heard from the NSA is "Clearly if you want privacy, you must want to hide something."

Yep this argument is so stupid I saw a ted talk now I know how to reply to idiots.

Is it an invasion of privacy? Yes

Does it actually block potential threats? Yes

Is it wrong? That depends on your perspective

Honestly though anyone who was of the mind that their privacy would be intact the moment they touched the internet is hilariously naive, if some government agency in your country wants to know what you do on the internet they WILL find out. Since it won't stop ever you all should just learn to deal with someone knowing about all who you really are and what kind of porn you like.

Ok, when has the government ever done anything efficiently and well planned?

I'm pretty sure that if the NSA were actually spying on you they wouldn't be very subtle and any moderately secured network would detect the intrusion.

I'm guessing they're probably watching Facebook and Twitter and calling that 'Advanced Internet Monitoring'

What about seeing everything that you do online when you aren't using VPNs or Proxys or some type or encryption.

Why not have protection from All Qaeda AND privacy? The way things are being done currently mean everyone loses. Plenty of experts in security and computing have said that there are better ways of protecting the public that don't diminish the foundation of the internet and take away people's privacy. As far as I'm aware, the current NSA/GCHQ/ASIO doesn't do the public much good.
