Hi,

Got some new components the other day for my budget build and it all worked fine. I was a bit worried that the old PSU I had wasn't up for the task, as it is 6 years old and a just above the required output (480W PSU, ~430W required according to eXtreme Power Supply calc.), but it worked. For 2 days. It ran fine playing BF4 on ultra for an entire evening, but the next day after some hours of Shadow of Mordor it all of the sudden shut down, and it smelled a little bit burnt. I've tried unplugging everything else except the motherboard but it's still unresponsive (the power light lights up for a split second then nothing).

Should I replace the PSU for one with greater wattage?

Specs:

Xilence XP480

Intel i5-4670K

MSI H81M-P33

EVGA GTX680 SC

2x 4GB Kingston DDR3 1333MHz

120GB SSD

2x 500GB HDD

2x 120mm fans

Nothings been OC'd, as I was cautious of the low margin of the PSU.

I'm aware the manufacturers recommend a PSU of >550W for the GPU, but I instead (stubbornly) used the 480W I had from previously to keep the costs down, as the calculator showed less than that in required watts.

My theory (albeit a newbies theory) is that the PSU's output may have degraded over time, as the listed continuous wattage is 480 (not peak), but it still cant supply what the system needs, or that the calculator didn't take some details into consideration in its estimate.

I'd appreciate sharing some wisdom on my conundrum, as I don't have a lot of experience on the matter.

Thanks,

Niclas.

yes, you need a new higher wattage psu, i recommemd going with atleast a 500 watt psu from a good brand (seasonic, corsair, cooler master, etc.) Because that gtx 680 consumes a lot of power, also when calculating wattage you have to put an extra 25% in for both future upgrades and just to be sure you have enough

I5 4670k (Noctua NH U12S), Asus Maximus VI Hero, Nvidia GTX 560 ti Asus DCU II, 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro, Kingston SSDNow v300 120 gb SSD 1TB Seagate Baracuda, Corsair Carbide 300R

Try and get a EVGA g1/x 650w/+ gold or bronze, are cheap and good.
