Hello, I'm playing on a fairly extensive system upgrade soon and was looking for some options on the part list before hand.

I'll be upgrading from a i5 3570k to either a 46 or 47 --90K  part. The the main and basicly sole use of the the machine at the time is gaming. The reason i'm considering the 4790k is because of its higher out of the box clockspeed. I'm not sure when or if I want to OC my CPU again. For the motherboard I have picked out the Hero 7, though I may go with a MSI M-Series board. (for the intel NIC).

There are four sticking points though. The cooler, SSD, and PSU.

1. SSD- Currently I have the 850 picked out. The 10 year warranty looked great as does the new NAND. Though I'm thinking about maybe getting a 512gb MX100 or something similar for the extra capacity.

2. Cooler- Can't decide between the x61 or h105 really. Thoughts?

3. PSU- In my current system I have an AX-760. Part of the reason i'm planing on the system upgrade is to use my current one as a file/backup server. I really don't want to leave the parts in the tower without a power supply hooked up and 700 watts is kinda overkill for it's new use.

4, OS- do I really need to buy a new windows key? I currently have a copy of regular Win 8 (NOT .1) and was wondering If i could go through support and transfer/reactivate it on the new machine?

Here is my current part selection. the 3tb HDD will probably be transferred back to the old system after I've repurposed it.

Keep that 3570k till it dies unless you wanna send me it :D

If you upgrade from a 3570k to a 4690k I'm gonna laugh at you dude...

Yeah, I know right!!! The reason is my current system is having really odd stability problems in some games. Even without the overclock I have on it right now and I'm pretty sure it's not the GPU.

X61, H220-X or H240-X would be better than the H105.

The psu is a great unit. May as well reuse it.

It would be more expensive, but you may want to consider an M.2 PCIe ssd.

The i5-4690K is better than the i5-3570K but not by a great deal, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/701?vs=1261.

And I'm pretty sure it's not the CPU either.

I'm sure it's not too. But, I wanted to turn this system into a back up / file server too while I was at it.

that could be software or other components but i doubt your 3570k

that'd be a waste. just get a new motherboard and get the xeon 1230 v2 for the file server

how is it a waste if i'm just reusing parts?

to upgrade a perfectly decent pc that can overclock into a server.

Ooookay I guess. Not really though to me anyways. I'd be getting a updated PC with features I'm looking for and repurposing old hardware.

why do ppl ask for advice but fail to give context, sure pc looks good

I suppose I should do that :P

Basicly a few months ago my system started having odd issues during gameplay. Odd freezes/lock ups and really weird FPS issues in some games. The game it was most noticeable in was World of Tanks. the game would run fine 60 FPS, freeze up, stutter heavily as the FPS dropped down to 20-10 before climbing back up to 60 or so. This would happen every 10 seconds or so. This is the most extreme case. I was in contact with their support for about 3 months trying to solve the issue and go no where. And it's started a little in other programs as well. I'm pretty sure the issue is with either my drives, or windows but I have no idea which. I've tried the game on both an SSD and a HDD and the problem occurs when installed to either so I'm pretty sure its some issue with windows.

2.what about the silverstone TD02 if not nzxt

3.You cant go "overkill" with a power supply

4. You might be able to. If not try out the windows 10 preview. ITS AWESOME But not as good as linux

1. I think that's what I'm going to do actually. The extra space would be nice.

2. I would but it has pretty poor user reviews from what I can tell.

3. No, I suppose you can't. I really don't want to get a new one right now though. WIll figure something out.

4. windows 8 works just fine for now. and I really don't want to use a OS that's essentially unfinished.

Windows is never finished even after support for windows xp ended there still updates.

2. go for the x61. Cam is pretty nice

3.Do you not have a small space psu if not why not go for a cheapo one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438016&cm_re=evga_500-_-17-438-016-_-Product

4. i suppose. you could http://lifehacker.com/5958507/uninstall-your-windows-product-key-so-you-can-use-the-license-on-another-pc

1.So jelly. cant even afford a 64gb one :'(

How did you rule out the gpu as the problem source?

Have you monitored temps when this behavior occurs?

I monitored temps for both the CPU and the GPU. My CPU usually stays around 40-50c and the GPU (gtx 780) never really gets hotter than 65-70 IIR in Tanks at least. The only abnormal behavior I observed was the GPU core and memory load would drop like a rock when it would lock up. usually going from 50/30 i think all the way down to single digits, even 0 sometimes for a few seconds before climbing back up. This happens a little in other games too I've started to notice, only in a few and not nearly as bad. A few frames drop here and there during loading or what not really, but nothing as extreme as what I described in tanks. Certainly not single digits or 0 load being reported (reported by GPU-z, EVGA precision, and MSI afterburner.)

Do you have an oc on the gpu? If so, have you reverted to stock and seen the same problem?

Have you monitored any temps on the motherboard itself?

yep, reverted to stock settings on my CPU and GPU. Even disabled XMP so everything was running  at the most basic speed possible. No effect. As for motherboard temps, not really. I payed attention to LED display on the motherboard which displayed system temp, as well as whatever HWmonitor was showing. Nothing got crazy according to either readout.

I feel like I should also mention that my current motherboard (MSI-GD65 -Gaming), is having some power problem to the USB ports. the mouse and keyboard random drop out randomly

It does seem like a motherboard issue.
