Here is my take on it

Swapped the board for a full size ATX. A matx would look lost in a full tower case.

The cooler will have thermal paste so you don't need the extra stuff.

Changed the Ram for some faster G.Skill.

The Crucial MX100 is a better SSD than the V300.

The EVGA Supernova G2 750w will allow you to sli in the future.

Swapped the Monitor for a 144Hz one. You will see the difference over a 60Hz especially if you play a lot of FPS games.

You don't need a dedicated soundcard, as the Sniper has excellent on board audio.

The board also has built in Ethernet so you don't need the wired Network adapter. If you need Wireless then keep the wireless one in.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G1.SNIPER Z97 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($99.99 @ Amazon)
Optical Drive: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer  ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($97.46 @ OutletPC)
Monitor: Asus VG248QE 144Hz 24.0" Monitor  ($251.33 @ Amazon)
Wireless Network Adapter: Asus PCE-N53 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter  ($33.64 @ Amazon)
Keyboard: Corsair K70 RGB Wired Gaming Keyboard  ($169.99 @ Amazon)

My spec above is pretty nice. It is well under your budget, and it will allow you to add a 2nd GTX 970 in the future.

Could nearly go SLI now if he picks a bit cheaper 970 it will max it out though.

I agree. The Maxwell cards are very power efficient, but a 750W is a good size for most dual card setups. It leaves room for overclocking the gpu/cpu if the op wants to do that.

Plus the psu won't be working as hard, so it should run quieter (And the G2 has hybrid fan mode so the fan might not even kick in)

Yeah indeed it says estimated wattage 501 W for dual SLI with the Asus cards just let's say add a 100 W for security and it still won't even be near the 750W.
