Mobile storage drive recommendation

PercySavageEG

I'm planning to get a storage drive for my mom who works in an office, she tends to fill up her flash drives really quickly with office documents (word, powerpoint, excel, company schedules) to a point that 32 and 64gb drives are not enough anymore (she has around 5 or 6 64gb flash drives that has to be locked away after they are used up). She would also like to start carrying her company's event picture around too so I was thinking of getting her a 1-2tb drive and I would like to hear your recommendations on which drive I should get, if possible, I would like the drive to follow these requirements:

  • under US$200
  • maximum size of a passport
  • doesn't weigh much (this is not a really important but since she will be carrying it around, I thought it would be better for it to be light)

I would also like to ask whether I should get an ssd, high storage flash drive or 2 hdd and then run them in RAID 1? (redundancy is really important because it will be holding a lot of extremely important content)

thanks in advance

Does she save a document or two everyday or does she save a load at once?

I think it's a load at once

edit: it might be both, I'm not sure

Water,Dust, Shock proof.

This thing really works.

I banged it on the handrails of my apartment complex and it's still completely functional.

If not, maybe something like this with a 840 EVO.

Ah ok I see. I'm guessing she'll want a fast drive then? If that's the case then this drive may be good: http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Backup/dp/B00E055H5O/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1415959922&sr=1-6&keywords=external+hard+drive

From a video I saw it transferred a 261.7 MB file in 5 seconds. I'm not sure the speeds of the drive your mum is looking for but this one certainly has good capacity. (2TB)

Hey PercySavageEG,

What system does your mother work on (PC, Mac, both)?
You have a couple of options:
- Set up a NAS at your home or at her office and she would be able to access it from anywhere with internet connection and backp and store her files there. You can have pretty huge storage spaces with NAS setups and have great redundancy.
- You could get her a portable drive and do backups daily/weekly on another external drive or a computer.
- You could get a dual-slot enclosure and run a RAID 1 on it.

If you go for a NAS, I could suggest checking out WD My Cloud Mirror as it offers data access from anywhere over the network or the web and comes preset to RAID 1 Mirroring. It is a bit over your budget but it might be useful for what you are looking for. Here's a link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1200.

If you are looking for a portable drive with security, I could suggest that you check out WD My Passport series as they are durable, offer hardware encryption and work great with backup software. Here are a couple of links:

Hope this comes in handy,

Captain_WD.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

It's a shame that the EVO is just so expensive when it comes to a 1tb drive though, and as she only work in an office, I don't think the water, dust and shock prove would be necessary

I think I might go for this because I was running 4 wd 80gb black drives in my old rig up until a month ago when the on board graphics of that rig broke down and the drives were still working great ( I had the rig for around 5 years ) except that the capacity wasn't enough for my use anymore unfortunately

she mostly work on a PC and setting up a NAS at her work or at home aren't really viable option but if you can recommend a drive enclosure that allows 2 2,5" drive that I can set up RAID 1 with, that would be much appreciated
