Hey everyone, my year old Seagate 7200RPM 1TB drive has been making an intermittent sound. It sounds like a mix of a click and a crunch.. Almost like a chirping sound. It does it every few minutes, and sometimes it doesn't do it at all. It only makes the sound when idle, if I'm using it, then it never happens. I haven't noticed any performance degradation, and the drive sounds normal except for the chirp noise that it makes every so often...

Ideas??

Ditch it, if a hard drive starts making any kind of noises no matter if it's idle or not, it's untrustworthy.

Ususally it makes these kinds of noises if it isn't getting enough power, but considering it doesn't click when it works then I don't know.

Back everything up and get another drive.

It does get enough power though. I have a 750 watt corsair PSU. I use 280 watts under full load.

I have a Seagate HDD and its also about a year old and making these noises when its coming out of idle, When i open my computer and access the drive it does lag.

I have played around with some of the windows settings though (predictive HDD usage, caching and all that stuff). I do have some WD drives, but the seagate is making a louder noise than the head parking.
