You can do both. Passive needs a low pass filter. Active needs a line level converter. Passive with filter is the way to go IMO. Both need a little DIY'ing

thank you, i just realized how awesome audioengine's n22 is for what i have in mind:)

Can you explain?

sure! i will plug in my old and super classy passive jvc speakers (made in belgium;)) and shortly after that i will get the relatively cheap sub from yamaha (YST SW 012 Advanced YST II) plug it in aswell. eventually i will have a neat setup for my retro tv corner:)

But then you're powering an active sub with an active signal..... That won't work.

at audioengineusa.com they say, that you can connect a subwoofer to the variable line out and since their own sub is powered i figured it must work somehow. or not?

also i found out that you can't get a n22 in germany atm:D 21st century man..

Can be. I don't know if active subs can proces the signal themselves or if they need an already lowpassed signal from a sub pre-out. I'm sure someone with more experience with active subs can help us out here.

quite s few active subs are able to use high level in. Along with rca's some active subs have a speaker pass through that you can give the sub signal with incase you don't have a dedicated subwoofer output.
