Mini-Atx Build

Go to solution Solved by Spev,

Looks like pretty much all 1366 motherboards have been discontinued...RIP...I'll have to select a small case that accepts a full size board.

/thread

Alright guys, so I'm in the process of building my main PC full tower rig. However, I would still like to utilize some of the parts from my current PC so they don't go to waste. I have a full tower currently, but was thinking about building a Mini ATX build with my old parts to take up less room, as I really don't have room for 2 full towers.

Current PC parts (Want to scrap and use as much as possible):

Intel i7 980 (not 980x btw)

2GB (4GBx3) DDR3/1600MHz Corsair Vengence

Also my old GTX 580 hopefully.

CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gold 80 Plus Power Supply (If it will fit?)

Gigabyte GA-X58A-OC motherboard

I'm assuming I have to buy a new PSU and new MOBO to fit in a small case? Anyways, I would still like to use these parts. I would use this as my browsing PC, rendering PC, just everyday stuff and light gaming or whatever my 580 can handle.

The problem I'm running into is I think my 980 can only fit in a 1366 motherboard? I'm not super knowledgeable on this, but I think that's the case. & I'm having a hard time finding 1366 mini mobos. Any help or advice would be appreciated, or even case suggestions as I haven't looked much yet.

Current PC build: [CPU: Intel i7 8700k] [GPU: GTX 1070 Asus ROG Strix] [Ram: Corsair LPX 32GB 3000MHz] [Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A] [SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB primary + Samsung 860 Evo 1TB secondary] [PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 750w 80plus] [Monitors: Dual Dell Ultrasharp U2718Qs, 4k IPS] [Case: Fractal Design R5]

What is your budget?

It's really not too limited, however I am building my new full tower rig right now as well which will cost me quite a bit. I am hoping to put the least money possible into this build, considering I already own most of the parts. I saw one Asus 1366 mini mobo, but it was like $200 bucks. I am really hoping to not spend too much on this since I already own my GPU, CPU, and ram. As much as I'm liking the mini ATX build, it might be cheaper for me to just build a mid tower. I'm not sure.

Give me any suggestions you have and I'll let you know if the prices work. It's just the fact that I just bought a GTX970, and am completely rebuilding a new full tower PC which will be expensive, so I'm not wanting to spend too much is possible. Was hoping to just buy a min case, and if I have to a mini mobo, and still use my old parts if they will all fit.

Edit: I'm not sure if there are any mini cases that will fit a regular atx board. My current board is the Gigabyte GA-X58A-OC.

So far this is the only 1366 mini/micro mobo I have found: http://www.amazon.com/Rampage-III-Intel-Micro-Motherboard/dp/B003UT6C32#customerReviews

Edit 2: Welp it appears they don't even make that mobo anymore....this might not work. =/

@Spev

I don't think it makes sense to buy a new mobo and case when you already have a perfectly fine working one.  Also, you don't need a new PSU.

Have you ever considered a test bench?

Cooler Master makes some nice High Air Flow "HAF" cases that are of a smaller size than a true mid tower, yet still houses everything very well.  In my mind, doesn't make sense to buy new parts when everything you already have is working perfectly.   Buy a new case and invest the rest of your money into the new build.

Yes, as I mentioned and as you know I'm building my full tower, however I still want to use my old parts. I just I don't have room for 2 full towers. Which is why I wanted to put my current build in a small case. Preferably I don't want to buy any new parts, and just want to put my old build in a smaller case so use it for everyday tasks/light gaming. I'll check out your link.
