Raid controller

I am building a home server with 11 wd red 2tb drives. It will be running on an old core 2 duo e8400 on a Maximus formula mb, 6gb of corsair dominator ram, just need a good raid card that will run the drives in either a raid 0, 1, or 5. Can recommend a good raid card.

I would just grab some card off ebay second hand like:

With 11 drives I'm not sure what would be best but probably a raid5/6

 

Note: the above card only supports 8 drives so you will also need to use onboard ports and possibly software raid if you wanted them all in the same cluster.

With 11 drives I'm not sure what would be best but probably a raid5/6

For the RAID type, you would need an even number of drives to do the conventional mirroring (RAID 1) or RAID 10 / RAID 01. I would say that RAID 0 with 11 drives is way too risky as you would lose all your data if even one drive drops out of the array and you would have no redundancy at all. Depending on how much space you need, I would say RAID 5 and RAID 6 would be the best option from the conventional types.

 

Regarding the drives, WD Red drives are great for NAS/RAID environments as they are designed specifically for that. I would suggest you check out WD Red Pro, though, as the normal WD Red drives are designed and recommended for arrays with up to 8 drives while WD Red Pro are designed for arrays with up to 16 drives, spin faster, have longer warranty and perform better in larger arrays. Here's a link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1280. WD Red would also work just fine if you decide to stick with them.

 

I believe any card that supports a least 11 drives would do the job for you so I would say get the best deal you could find.
