Z97.. Not sure which, but look for features that you will need...

Edit: G1 Sniper Z87 I think has the Black and Green thing... You can get a Z97 Sabertooth and PlastiDip the shielding...

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to buy an i5 4690K

What motherboard should i get?

It needs to have a good price to performance ratio.

Factors:

I will only use 1 Graphics Card

Theme im going for is black and green

Hey there marvin968,

Since you plan on overclocking ( you chose the k-version of the 4690) you would need a Z-type of a motherboard.
That CPU is a LGA1150 97-type but you could use a 87-type motherboard if you update its BIOS.
People also have reported good results for overclocking with H-types of motherboards.

I would say a Z97 LGA1150 would be a perfect MOBO, but you could also go with a Z87, H97 and H87 (depends on what you find best for your needs and budget).

Hi Marvin.

You will need to get a z97 motherboard if you plan to make full use of that CPU. Which one? It mostly doesn't really matter, all of them perform well with the main differences being the features they support, get the one with the features you need at a comfortable price point.

In terms of theme.... I'm not aware of any black and green z97 motherboards, however there are many black motherboards that you could use, you can then add an reference nvidia GPU that has a green glowing logo, plus maybe some RAM with green heatsinks, green led lighting effects, stuff like that.

Hello and welcome to LTT fellow kababayan! :)

Well, this is pretty TUFF ( :P) since there aren't a whole lot of green Z97 motherboards out there. You could go with the Gigabyte GA-Z87 G1 Sniper as what @DigitalHermit suggested, but you'll lose some of the benefits of the Z97 chipset and maybe a couple of MHz if you are going to overclock, which is what Devil's Canyon (and upcoming Broadwell) CPUs are designed for. Other than that, I haven't really seen any Z97 motherboard that has a black/green color scheme. :/

Well, it doesn't really hurt to shift to another color scheme. Yeah, the Z97(X) Gaming boards of MSI and Gigabyte are pretty good considering their price, and you could just buy a matching red/black GPU. :) The Sabertooth Mark 2 and Mark 1 are also excellent, but I would probably get a Maximus VII Ranger or Hero instead for more or less the price of the Sabertooths respectively... :)

Is it still worth it to get z87 board?

It's a little outdated at this point, it's not really worth it expect maybe if you don't care about the new features and manage to find a one that for a really low price, but it would have to significantly cheaper for it to be worth while.

Umm, do all z87 allready have bios update? Maybe you can ask someone to update bios.

some have voltage errors especially gigabyte they can lock your cpu at 1.5v and for haswell 1.5 volts will kill your cpu unless you are under a custom loop or more exotic cooling

Some of the manufacturers alongside with their BIOS partners have updated and released some of their H87 motherboards as well as some of their other non-z MOBOs to be able to do some stable overclocking. You can look that up on the internet, people have actually reported pretty good results.

I think Z87 is still good if you are not going broadwell next year.

I've recently read many reviews of ASUS's Z97 line-up. Z97M, Z97K, Z97DELUXE and other boards provide nearly equal overclocking potential (4.4 for one board and 4.5 for another).

As I am not familiar with that particular motherboard, I would say you should look for this on the internet. There are many places where people have shared info on if and how did they overclock their CPUs on non-z motherboards. I'm interested if anyone here has tried this. :)
