I'm wondering how you set up a gigabit lan network? I know it's a derp question and also what is the cheapest way?

Thanks :)

Buy a cheap gigabit switch, since pretty much 100% of motherboards now come with gigabit Ethernet ports, a switch is all you need.

I have the UD5H by Gigabyte and it has a gigabit port. Could you recommend a cheap switch?

And don't forget the cables, i'd recommend Cat 5e or Cat 6.

It has to be well made too, especially if you want to put the connectors on yourself. If there is too much crosstalk, it will most likely fall back to 100Mbps instead of allowing Gigabit speeds.

Do we need a howto on how to make your own cables?  This is one of my seven talents...

Well this is exactly how it's done  :P .

The female connector (the one you normally put in the wall) is a little bit harder imo, and it requires some other tools too.

a punch (impact) tool? NAH, those are easier to install than the plug IMO.

You'll want a nice basic networking kit.  I recommend paladin tools.

First and foremost: WHY do you want gigabit networking? Don't spend your money on it if you're not going to use for anything except internet, because it won't make your internet connection any faster. If you need to do datatransfers over LAN, then go for it! :)

Setting up a gigbit network is easy, my set up I use is I have my router provided by my ISP, this acts as my internet connection and DHCP server.  DHCP gives out IP address' to your PCs.  Then I have 2 8 port gigabit switches, one for up stairs and one for the down stairs and a cable running between the 2 switches.

I went with Rosewill switches from Newegg because they are cheap, about $25 when I bought them and they have auto switching ports so I did not need to make a cross over cable when running the wire between the switches

All newer switches have had this for the past 5 years now. If you find one that doesn't have that, stay away from that.

This quote is something to consider OP.

Unless you are constantly moving really large files across your network, it isn't worth it.

I guess a gigabit network could be used for future proofing as well as some file transfers. I am going to be doing a complete network infrastructure guide soon. I may do some videos but I will see.
