So i know Skype is "encrypted" (https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA31/does-skype-use-encryption) but just how secure is it really? I mean you hear all about popular streamers and YouTube'rs getting DDOSed to hell since people used Skype to find out their IP, so just how secure is it? If i were for example attending a LAN-party could someone else on the same network record my conversation/massages/files sent and received?

Highly appreciating any input on the matter, as i am clueless when it comes to security for the most part.

It is literally so easy to find someones IP using skype, you don't have to be friends with them or anything. And it is not to difficult to hack someone with just their, also you can find someones location with their IP.

OK so you can get some ones IP and you could hack them, but what i was thinking of, was if it was possible to sort of sniff out the data being sent through the network, and save it and then be able to review it at a later date?

So that in theory someone at a LAN-party for example could set it up to record a bunch of the Skype calls and stuff, OR is the encryption good enough that even if they got the data it would be impossible to read for them?

I know Skype uses an RC4 encryption which is a pretty terrible encryption and for someone with a good knowledge of encryption and security it probably wouldn't be very hard to read.

I'd say you're fine. But not sure if there would be someone at your lan party that would looses his time and effort to intercept your top-secret conversion on skype :D

They don't say what kind of encryption they use but I'd strongly recommend using a VPN on top of that if privacy is really a concern.

Can't do anything with someone's IP... Everyone can know your IP... Like when you're gaming.. Doesn't make it easier to hack you... It's like saying "I've got your phone number : I can hack you..."

Back in the days you could sort of ddos someone and make their modem fail by sending a lot of packets, today it's like attacking a tank with a water pistol...
