Need to pick new GPU

Go to solution Solved by dragoon20005,

Would the extra performance from the the 970 be worth the extra $100?

look in this link

So recently, this is going to sound like BS but the powerline outside my house got stuck my lightning, and I had a huge power surge throughout my hole house. I got all the power back to my house and went to go on my pc to see if it was damaged. And unfortunately the CPU got fried. So as I'm going to need a new CPU and I don't want to get a used one Im going to need a new motherboard as well. So I thought I may as well buy a new GPU as well. Any suggestions on what I should get? I live In Australia and I don't want to spend over $450 I was thinking of getting a Gigabyte 4Gb R9 290 for $400. Would this be good with a i7 4770k and the Asus ROG MAXIMUS VII RANGER?

-Thanks

get a 4690K and the Asus Z97-A mobo

you will have enough for a decent GPU

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Since you have $400 AUD for the GPU and looks liek about $550-600 for CPU/motherboard let me make you a build for those 3 components

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

I would do this instead assuming you have the money to do so. Otherwise just go with an I5-4690k and GTX 970 and the MSI Z97-G55 SLI or Maximus VII Ranger (Seriously the ranger is cheaper than the Z97 gaming 5 from MSI lol)

I'm only spending that much on a mobo and cpu because the insurance claim will have to have an equivilent price to what I already had

Then straight up go with the I7-4790k and Ranger for sure. Great parts. For the GPU I recommend getting the GTX 970 instead though.

Looks like the 290 and 970 are very close on many of the games and benchmarks, I think I'm going to go with the 290, thanks everyone for your time and opinions. :)
