Best application method for thermal compound?

Yes, you can use too much. 

So I watched this video along with a couple of others. I was going to do the pea method for my installation tomorrow but I think I might try the X method? It looks like better coverage, I know mostly the center needs to be cooled, I'm just trying to figured out the most effective method for cooling. What do you guys think.

 

Also, can you put too much paste? I heard someone tell me less is better.

pea method works, although I did use line and spread before with minimal differences in temp...

 

Just don't use too much (cake method)...

Yes. You can put on too much thermal compound. The whole "less is better" isn't realy true. You want the right amount, which is about the size of a pea/grain of rice. If you put on too much, thermal compound will eventually start to insulate heat, rather than conduct it.
