ions get larger when they gain electrons.

 

the greatest effect on size of an ion is the valence electron "level"

 

across the board, if the number of protons is held constant, more electrons increase size due to electron-electron repulsion and then increase size a huge amount if the valence electron level changes.

Cations have a positive charge because they lose electrons, anions have a negative charge because they gain electrons. 

Sadly this I haven't gotten to in Chem yet. So you're talking mostly gibberish to me :P
