So recently I restored my old Note II to factory settings and my god was it a performance boost. People go on about how TouchWiz slows down the phone and that may be true but the launcher was completely unaffected - so damn smooth.

Well anyway, I decided I didn't care if I bricked the thing while trying to load a custom ROM since my main driver atm is a MotoG so that's why I'm here looking for ROM suggestions.

I'm looking essentially for these features:

  • Near stock android like performance
  • The developer is prompt about updating to the latest version of android
  • Following from this I'd like for updates to be done over-the-air (I don't know if this is the norm or not when it comes to custom ROMs) rather than having to flash the latest version myself
  • Only additional feature I'm interested in (beyond stock) is being able to customize the UI more freely
  • Since the phone is a Note 2 I'd like to be able to use the S Pen although this is less of a priority compared to the other things

So yeah. Just a reminder the phone I'm looking to flash a custom ROM on is the Note 2. CyanogenMod seems to be the most popular but I thought I'd hear some others that may interest me more.

Thanks in advance.

I am a huge fan of Paranoid Android, though HighOnAndroid put up a video about a Note 4-like ROM for the Note II. I would suggest finding an overclocking kernel though. You can, using it, undervolt/overvolt or underclock/overclock the CPU. With this, you can make your device either consume less power or perform better. OTA updates are pretty normal with Paranoid and CM. As well, they both use the CyanogenMod Theming Engine, allowing for fine customization of the stock experience.

Paranoid is also one that I've heard about though don't know as well as CM. Perhaps worth looking into in more detail.

Thanks for the reply.

Paranoid has more customization and features like Pie and HALO that CM doesn't have, but personally it's just way too overwhelming for me, CM is a good balance of customization and ease of use.

CyanogenMod is generally good, but lately I've been having SMS issues with the ROM. That may just be for my device though. Experiment. Other ROMs that I'd recommend are AOKP (which is what I'm currently using), SlimKat, CarbonROM, and I hear that Paranoid Android is pretty good, but I've never used it before.

CyanogenMod might be the best because they (usually) release nightlies every night and you can update it easily using CyanDelta.
