Contemplating Updating/New build

Go to solution Solved by Dicoray,

That is good to hear, i have never really done much CPU overclocking just some basic GPU overclocking so ill read up a bit on it, and get a good cooler.

Linus and Austn Evans both have good videos on overclocking it, they are the Haswell Refresh overclockers guide (LTT) and best budget cpu (Austin Evans), austin evans was able to get his to 4.6 with a hyper 212 evo

Hey Everyone,

So i am looking into updating or just doing a full new build and wanted to try and get some other opinions.

Here is my current setup. (Not functioning, MB wont post(have been unable to test and see if its MB or CPU releated))

I7-860

ASRock P55DE3 LGA 1156 MB

4x2 gb G.Skill DDR3 1600(PC3-12800)

Asus GTX 650 2 gig

Hitachi 250gig HDD OS

2x Hitachi 500gig Storage(Non Raid)

Antec Trio 650 watt psu

I am currently in the US, North Carolina to be exact. I am trying to determine what would be best to do in this case, try a replacement MB and just be out the money since its almost impossible to find a reasonably priced 1156(that is new or could be returned) or go ahead and figure out a new build all together.

This rig is used for EverQuest 2(Single core processing heavy) and Media streaming(Very crucial as i have no Cable/Satalitte) to other devices in the house.(Been a real big drain with it being down) I dont do much gaming outside of EQ2 and if i do its still only MMO's, not a big F.P.S. gamer. Currently swaping between 3 "Monitors" only 1 is actual monitor, LG L222WTS(needs new PSU board), 19 inch Vizio TV or 37 inch Vizio TV(just depends on if people are visiting) I would like to get the LG up and running again. or save up for a replacement. I also currently have functional peripherals, keyboad, mouse, headset, but would like to replace those as well.

I know this is a tall order, however i have not set a budget for this yet. My main goal is to figure out if i should try to repair this, cost like 75 bucks for a refurb 1156 board or just save up and get a whole new rig in tax season.

Thanks alot everyone for your opinions and let me know if you want more information.

I thought about going that route for the gaming but ive read several reviews that state the pentium just isnt up to the streaming ability. Unless im understanding it wrong.

Could you use PcPartPicker?

I can definetly use PCPartPicker, i have been making day dream systems for over a year now.

My friend uses one in his build, he took out his i3 4350 and put the pentium in, and multicore performance was worse because it does not have hyperthreading, but when it it is overclocked it blew the i3 away in multicore performance.

Thanks for this ill check it out, ive been playing around in my head with getting that cpu already anyway. Based on my use of rig do you suggest grabbing an SSD for os drive and upgrading to sata 6 gb/s storage instead of the old sata 3 gb/s drives i am currently using ?

Also, do you know if a 212 evo can fit in a fractal design core 1000 usb 3.0 edition? i know it says it will on pc part picker but didnt know if you might know of some actual testing.

Not sure what happened, but it looks like my post was removed,

I realized i forgot something out of my original post,

I do some video transcoding(just some basic conversion of format for streaming purposes) not sure if that will make a difference as far as multicore need, i use Any Video Converter for it.

Well, according to PC part picker the Hyper 212 Evo will not fit, but you could get a lower profile heatsink, or buy a AIO liquid cooling setup. I am not sure about the video transcoding, but the pentium has a feature called quicksync which improves the performance of h.264 encoding
