Couple SLI questions

Just a few questions.  I get the basic jist of SLI but,

 

Can you run Two GPUs not in SLI?

If you can, what are the effects on the system?

When Running SLI, can you use output ports on both cards or is it set up as a master and slave?

you can run one card as a physX processor but don't

 

It's master and slave, the top card gets the output

Top card generally has the most lanes and is the main card. And you can run 2 amd cards not in SLI, but they call it Cross Fire / xFire. 

 

For Nvidia, one could be a PhysX card, but that's stupid. 

 

You can also only have the same card in SLI, No 970+980 or anything (Cooler doesn't matter though, Asus Card can SLI with EVGA/Zotac/MSI/Gigabyte etc)
