Ok I have some strange problem...  I have 4gb ram but the pc is runing slow (it is old but new to me a friend gave it 2-3 days ago) and I re-installed windows 7 x64 Home Edition and every thing is new and clear.. But I run out of ram all the time the system is using 2gb constantly and 2gb cached even when I have only skype and google chrome (1 tab) running.

Why is this happening ? And how to fix it ?

Chrome uses a lot of ram, try a different browser and see if you get better results.

Check background processes then.

It would appear that Skype is using TONS of memory, might that be the issue perhaps?

EDIT: also do virus scanning and defrag your hard drive (NOT SSD IF YOU HAVE ONE)

Well now it is ~600-700 unless I use paint but closing skype is not a solution I use it all the time...

Did you defrag after re-installing W7?

Nope... I don't usually defrag after re-installing(I just don't have the habit to...)  but it is only 13% fragmented.. (is that much ?)

HOLY HELL YES THAT'S A LOT

Are you on a hard drive or an SSD? If an SSD is what is saying is fragmented, DO NOT DEFRAGMENT IT. If it's a hard drive, THEN THAT WOULD BE YOUR PROBLEM.

It'll take awhile to defragment so get yourself a cup of something and relax :)

EDIT: I usually defragment when I see about 5% defragmentation by the way, so seeing 13% makes me want to give your hard drive a hug :P

Defragmenting will help speed things up a lot (especially with 13% fragmentation). I also use Wise Memory Optimizer and that helps to optimizer my RAM. Usually drops the usage down quite a bit after closing chrome.

Thanks man it is a hard drive (why not defrag SSD I've head that before don't know why...) I'm defragmenting now and will probably make post for the results... :)

Downloading Memory Optimizer lets hope it works... :D

In chrome go to the setting and at the very bottom and uncheck continue running background processes.

Windows will use what ever it needs, thats why its taken up to 2gb etc,

And you could look to increase the amount of ram to 8GB or 16GB. You can get 8GB for less then £50 etc

For me using chrome takes up a bit of my 16GB look through your processes and see what taking up that chunk.

I'm looking forward to 8gb...

Memory optimizer works (kinda it frees up to 1gb but then after ~5min it is again 500-600mb and I have to clear again....)

Is there a way to change the cache to go through the hard drive ? I mean use the ram for the right now running programs, games etc... and use the hdd as cache for background process so the ram stays clear for the on going things ?

I'm pretty sure that can't happen. That's changing how the hardware works...

How did defragging go?
