I'm at a loss...

darren49402

When I plug my computer into my router there is no internet access, but whenever I hook directly into the modem I have internet access. I just went out and bought a new router and the same thing is still happening. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem here?

I have everything hooked up correctly, nothing about my setup has changed since I orginally hooked it up. The only thing ive done thus far is swap the router with a new one

router cannot have the same subnet as the modem - i.e. compare your system's ip when it's plugged into the router vs. when it's plugged into the modem, and the first 3 number should be different. If they are all the same, change your router's LAN address

The isp provides a public address via dhcp or statically in rare cases. The network range configured with the 192.168.1.0/24 is called a private ip address, other ones could include 172.16.1.0/24 or 10.0.0.0/8. NAT is used to convert from your private ip to the public ip. Your isp wouldnt give you an IP address in either of those ranges. So theres no possibility thats the problem. Hope that helped clear that up a bit  :D

Is it a cablemodem? If so, power it off for 60 seconds then power it back on while it's plugged into the router. If it's something like FIOS then you'll need to contact your ISP so they can break the DHCP lease associated with your pc.

The reason your direct connect works is that the network device attached (cablemodem in this example) knows your network cards' MAC address and assigns its only available IP to that MAC. The router has a different MAC address so it can't get a valid IP.
