Uncontrollable frame time issues

i5 3.40GHz

8 GB Ram

Drivers up to date.

I have had a problem playing my computer for a while which I would love to resolve. With the majority of games I have some sort of performance issue, even with games that are relatively undemanding. Attached is a typical graph that I see when playing (not shown is my gpu and cpu staying below 40%). Their always seem to be huge frame time spikes but neither my cpu or gpu seem to be being used much at all.

 

I appreciate optimisation comes into play, but even games I know to run well (for example that run well on a windows participation on a mac) seem to suffer *(v sync on or off) . 

 

Can anyone please help me, its driving me insane and I would love to be able to enjoy my computer properly.

thank you for the suggestions, unfortunately this problem has persisted for around a year since I built my computer so I would imagine the drivers may not be the problem.

Check the task manager whenever the slowdowns occur - you might have something running in the background slowing you down. 

That's all that comes to mind at the moment.
