my first car was really crappy though, crappy is a complement because of how bad it was

Ok, good, then get the Audi would be my advice. At the end of the day it's your money, but the Audi sticks to the road like glue with quattro.

You can't exactly control a vehicle when it hydroplanes... If an accident is caused by that, it isn't necessarily the drivers fault. And no, you aren't chill. Not by a longshot.

Yeah, you can to some extent, but you are right hydroplaning=loss of control. Nope, it isn't the drivers fault, it happens to a lot of people and it's that time of the year. I'm trying to be rational and this is chill, I don't get angry over forum posts, it's just pure logic that beginners should stick to some older cars until they learn to drive and it's what is usually done. I'm not judging him for totaling a car, I hit mine quite a few times breaking the bumper or breaking the plastics off of it, but again, that was the car I used until I learned to drive.

Whatever you end up buying... Remember to adjust your driving according to current road conditions. :)

17 years of driving and i have never lost control and crashed due to hydroplaning.

it really is surprising what you can get in that price range. I have seen a few m6's and m5's for just over 30 in my area

If he added 2k he could even get a gorgeous ferrari 400i (But it would be impossible to maintain and daily drive of course)

Paint over the badges and tell him it's a mazda^^ (Without the badges it's hard to guess that it is a ferrari)

But seriously. If you can test drive all the cars on your list it'll probably make it easier to choose :)

I'm torn between wanting to save your dad money and wanting to slap him upside the head for budgeting $36k to a teenager without a clean record. Selecting from 3 euro cars with high maintenance/consumable costs too... Are you planning to cover operating costs? Or is this one of those "My dad is buying a car that he allows me to drive, and I think I have a say in the matter" deals? He can get a brand new Legacy/Accord/Mazda6 for under $25k brand new, not inheriting someone else's problems. They're just as safe, if not safer, more fuel efficient, and have more reliable track records.

Sorry, but Bogica is right. If you had a crappy car, then get a fairly decent car. If you're not a very good driver, then learn to be better with a less expensive car. I picked out some cars that pass the IIHS's safety test with flying colors you might want to consider. They should be fairly good choices if you're not a tuner.

Volvo C30: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/volvo/c30/2008

VW Passat: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/volkswagen/passat/2009

Volvo S80 (My personal preference from this list): http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/volvo/s80/2007

Buick Regal: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/buick/regal/2011

Audi A3: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/audi/a3-4-door-wagon/2008

Subaru Forester: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/subaru/forester/2009

Ford Fusion: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/ford/fusion/2010

Mercury Milan (My other preference): http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/mercury/milan

There are lots of good-looking cars in here, and I'm sure there's something you like.

Wow. I drove and I passed my driving test in an A3 just like the one you posted. I can personally vouch for that being a good car.
